Easter with the Great Little Trains of Wales

As the days stretch out a little longer and the hills of Wales start to turn greener, the Great Little Trains of Wales begin to wake from their winter’s break. 

With two full weeks to fill entertaining the kids, the 12 member railways of the Great Little Trains of Wales are eager to welcome you aboard for a great day out, and some Easter surprises. 

Bala Lake Railway 

From April 3rd to 6th, Bala Lake Railway are hosting an Easter Egg Hunt. The "White Rabbit" has hidden eggs along the line and at the station, can you find them to solve the puzzle and win a chocolatey prize?

Brecon Mountain Railway 

Brecon Mountain Railway welcomes the Easter Bunny from 3rd to 6th April. Enjoy a steam train ride into Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park before meeting the Easter Bunny at Pant Station and an egg hunt along the line.

Fairbourne Railway

This miniature railway, running two miles along the coast from Fairbourne village out to the Mawddach Estuary, is operating regular daily services throughout the Easter holidays. Opt for a Day Rover ticket and combine your train ride with a walk on the beach or a short ferry trip across the estuary.

Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways

These two lines combined give you 40 miles of narrow-gauge railway through the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia), so if you're only doing one big trip this Easter, this might be the one. 

The Ffestiniog Railway runs from Porthmadog up through the mountains to Blaenau Ffestiniog and services commence 21st March. Whereas the Welsh Highland Railway goes all the way from Caernarfon to Porthmadog via Beddgelert and the Aberglaslyn Pass and services commence 28 March.

Llanberis Lake Railway

Throughout 2026 Llanberis Lake Railway will be running a shorter service due to National Grid’s electricity replacement project. The service will run approximately half a mile from their main station on Padarn Country Park to Llanberis station. 

Reflecting the shorter run, the ticket price is just £2 for adults, £1 for children and 50p for dogs and will allow passengers unlimited travel on the chosen day of travel.

The café at their main station on Padarn Country Park will remain fully open in accordance with the published timetable, as will both their retail shops.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

Diesel services on the Snowdon Mountain Railway start on 28th March, running three-quarters of the way up to Clogwyn Station. You’ll still experience the same awe-inspiring views as you travel up the mountain, passing waterfalls and gorges, to reach Clogwyn Station where you’ll be greeted by the dramatic, exposed view over Llanberis Pass.

Talyllyn Railway 

The world’s first preserved railway is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Alongside its daily services, there are some special events running this Easter. 

On Good Friday, 3rd April, their Stations at Stations event will enhance your understanding on the journey that Jesus Christ made on his way to the Cross.

Easter Sunday, 5th April, the Easter Bunny will visit the railway at Abergynolwyn station, there will also be arts and crafts activities and an Easter Egg hunt on the Discovery Trail where you can win a prize if you find the special egg.

Vale of Rheidol Railway 

Daily train services commence from 28th March climbing 600 feet over 12 miles of narrow-gauge from Aberystwyth through the Rheidol Valley to Devil’s Bridge where the waterfalls are well worth the walk down to see. A visit to the Engine Shed Museum at Aberystwyth station is included and is home to an extensive collection of historical locos and rolling stock.

Welsh Highland Heritage Railway

 

There will be plenty of little chocolate eggs to be had on 4th and 5th April at the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway for their Easter Fun event and daily services are running from 30th March throughout the holidays. 

Included in your ticket is a short ride on this small, volunteer-run line, a stop at Gelert's Farm Works where you can explore an all-weather, hands-on railway heritage centre and museum, and on most days a ride on the miniature railway too.

Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway

Hop aboard for the Easter Carrot Express from 3rd to 6th April for a steam train ride through mid-Wales, a chance to meet the Easter Bunny, an egg hunt, family entertainment and a chocolate Easter egg for every child, all included in the standard ticket price.

The Corris Railway

The Corris Railway will re-open for passenger services on 3rd April to 6th April for a gentle trip down the beautiful Dulas Valley. Enjoy a sneak peek into their workshops during the short, guided tour of the Railway’s headquarters at Maespoeth before returning to Corris for a visit to their shop and free museum.
