Help all the Great Little Railways of Wales

As visitors stay away from Wales and tourist attractions close the narrow-gauge railways of Wales are joining together to support their staff, volunteers and the future of the railways.

The member railways of the Great Little Trains of Wales (GLToW) have come together to organise pre-orders for their Gold Card (£150) and Discount Card (£15), and any funds raised will be shared between all the railways.

David, Jones, Chair of GLToW, Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Ltd (Bala Lake Railway) says:

We look forward to welcoming visitors back in the future and asking all railway enthusiasts to support us now.

We have strived over many long years to re-build, maintain and preserve our railways along with interesting and unique items of historic rolling stock, so we can offer a great experience to our customers.

We employ between us hundreds of dedicated staff who have the exceptional skills to operate our railways professionally. Safely preserving the railways and trains that run on them. We are now in a battle to pay and retain our staff, and to cover costs so we can see our businesses through this crisis and once again entertain our customers when the crisis is over.

The GLToW was established in 1970 as a joint marketing scheme over the years promoting the Discount Card in leaflets and promotions. Recently the group has been working with Visit Wales to assist the group to go to events at Birmingham New Street and attended international exhibitions, in Berlin. The group now hope that they with gather some support jointly from the wider community.

David says:

If you are in a fortunate position and have the means, please consider helping our railways. There are two ways in which you can help; order a Discount Card, £15 or a Gold Card £150. Our need for your help has never been greater.”

Both cards become valid from their first use, so when visitors return to Wales and use the cards, they are then valid for 12 months.

David says:

This will bring us much needed income at this time, whilst you will be able to enjoy the benefit of a pre-paid return journey on ten of the railways (Snowdon Mountain Railway is not included) once we are open again. Or a 20% reduction in the price you would normally pay at each individual railway with the Discount Card."

Members of the Great Little Trains of Wales are; Bala Lake Railway, Brecon Mountain Railway (Methyr Tydfil), Fairbourne Railway, Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways (Porthmadog), Llanberis Lake Railway, Snowdon Mountain Railway (Llanberis) not included on the Gold Card, Talyllyn Railway (Tywyn), Welshpool and Llanfair Railway (Llanfair Caereinion), Vale of Rheidol Railway (Aberystwyth) and Welsh Highland Heritage Railway (Porthmadog).

GLToW has been part funded by Welsh Government, Tourism Product Innovation Fund (TPIF) scheme.
